In a landmark victory for telemedicine, the Washington State Senate passed SB 5175, a bill that would dramatically increase reimbursements for telemedicine services. The movement had been unable to pass in the legislature twice before, however this time the bill passed unanimously.

State of Reform reports that, “SB 5175 would ensure that all medically necessary telemedicine services are reimbursable under public employee benefit plans, health carriers, and managed care organizations. Telemedicine is defined as health care services provided via interactive video and audio technology.”

The companion bill is highly likely to pass in the House where the previous two attempts both passed. Reimbursement is a critical facet to the long-term success of telehealth and each new state that ensures reimbursement represents a potentially massive market growth.
